Style Guide
WHAT TO WEAR FOR HEADSHOTS
What you wear for your headshot helps set the tone for your images and plays a big role in how your final photos feel. These guidelines are designed to help you look polished, professional, and put-together, while still feeling natural and like yourself — comfortable, confident, and not overdone.
Keep Your Profession in Mind
This will definitely vary based on your profession.
Keeping your profession and target audience in mind is important.
Colors
Ideally, you want to stick to solid colors if possible. And it’s usually best to choose more saturated colors like navys, hunter green, deep reds and so on. They tend to be more flattering and help to ground your images.
You can definitely do a print as long as it’s not too crazy busy, and again in flattering colors.
You can wear neutrals, but make sure they have enough contrast and flatter your skin tone.

Hair & Makeup
I’d definitely recommend investing a little more time in your hair and makeup for your headshot session. But no need to go overboard with makeup you wouldn’t typically wear or a hairstyle that isn’t you.
If you never wear a bold red lip, don’t wear one. If you usually wear your hair pulled back, you could consider a nice blowout with your stylist for a little extra polish.
Keeping hair and makeup natural but slightly elevated is key.
I usually go a little heavier with my foundation coverage (instead of my everyday tinted moisturizer) and add a little more contour which photographs better. Bring your foundation with you so you can touch up if needed.
Adding a little lip color is good, but do what feels natural.
Regardless if you like a bold red or not, I do recommend adding a little color to your lip. Even just a nudish pink works.
Please arrive with clean and dry hair. I recommend keeping your usual hairstyle for your headshot — it’s not the best time to try something completely new or straighten your signature curly ringlets
Necklines & Nails
Always be mindful of the neckline especially if these photos are for corporate America. You may want to button up your blouse a tad higher and leave the crop tops at home.
A v-neck works fine, but again, keep your cleavage in check.
Your nails may show in some photos, so choose a color you’re comfortable with if they are painted.
Accessories
No need to wear those giant statement earrings, or a bold necklace. Keep jewelry and accessories simple so that your headshot doesn’t date you too much.
It’ll give you more longevity out of your investment too.
Something like a simple thin necklace and small gold or silver hoop earrings or studs usually works well.
Feel free to bring any accessories you love, like jewelry, hairpieces, or scarves. They can add a personal touch to your photos.
Outfits
Bring outfits that make you feel confident and beautiful!
Choose tops that you love along with a pair of jeans, slacks, or a skirt.
Try to bring a variety of colors so you have options for your session.
Clothes that fit well photograph best — if something is a bit loose, a belt can help cinch the waist.
Bring appropriate bras and shapewear for each outfit. Don’t forget a strapless bra if needed, and pay attention to colors to avoid them showing through your clothes.
Layers often look great in photos, so feel free to bring a jacket, cardigan, or scarf to add dimension.
